Well another NFL draft in the books as we went from the surprise in Baker Mayfield going #1 overall to the Browns to Mr. Irrelevant Trey Quinn going #256 to the Redskins and all sorts of head scratchers in between. Guys like Barkley going to the Giants who will be an immediate impact player in fantasy both rushing and as a pass catcher out of the backfield are an almost lock in dynasty formats to go #1, but who were the others that will be the big impact rookies in fantasy this year is the real question. So who are the next few rookies to come off the board you ask. The one guy I see making an immediate impact this year is Calvin Ridley and this is where the phase where you get drafted really shows out getting a supreme talent in Ridley to add to Julio Jones and Sanu. Another player that looks to be an immediate impact fantasy player is Michael Gallup being drafted in Dallas to pair up with an under rated Allen Hurns could prove to be the one of the better WR duos of the year in my opinion.
Now when it comes to RB it gets a little tougher to pick which of these other 5 or 6 rookie RB’s will take over a backfield and prove they are a starter in the NFL ( after Barkley obviously ). Again the phrase where you get drafted is going to play a huge role for instance Ronald Jones III going to Tampa Bay is a perfect situation for him they just let Martin go and the other backs just don’t have the talent Jones possesses. Another great example would be Royce Freeman going to Denver with CJ Anderson out of the picture Freeman has a great chance to be a starter only giving up touches to Booker on 3rd down. Now on the other side of that one of my favorite backs in all of these rookies in Nick Chubb gets the shaft being drafted by the Browns who also added Carlos Hyde and still have Duke Johnson, who will all get touches dropping Chubb’s fantasy stock drastically. Then there is Rashaad Penny who I think will be the highest scoring RB behind Barkley he should step in and be a 3 down back relatively quickly with little to no competition in the backfield besides Carson who is coming off an injury.
Even the TE position has some possible immediate impact players like Hayden Hurst going to the Ravens who could step right in and be a great check down for Flacco. The TE I see having the best rookie campaign would have to be Mike Gesicki who is an absolute freak at the TE position Gesicki will be a match up nightmare for most defenses, but his one glaring issue is he can’t block. Another I see having a pretty good year in 2018 is Dalton Schultz with Witten hanging it up Schultz looks to be another in a long line of very successful TE’s from Stanford.
I haven’t really touched on the QB position, but I really don’t think any of these guys start day 1 if the teams have the option to let them sit for at least the start of the season. Honestly Baker Mayfield should be the starter the Browns drafted him #1 overall for a reason get him out there and get him real game experience. Next up would obviously be the consensus #1 ranked QB going into the draft in Sam Darnold and being drafted by the Jets could spell him starting a lot sooner than later with only Josh McCown to beat out and he may before the season even starts. Josh Rosen and Josh Allen both have a QB with experience in the league in front of them and I just don’t see them getting on the field over in Allen’s case AJ McCarron who sat behind a good QB in Andy Dalton. In Rosen’s case it could be sooner than expected it is Sam Bradford who can’t ever seem to stay healthy in front of him.
The only other 2 QB’s worth talking about are Mason Rudolph ( my #1 QB of the lot ) and Lamar Jackson who are both sitting behind former Super Bowl Champs in Big Ben and Joe Flacco. Until they move on from those guys they will be in great situations to watch and learn from a couple of guys who have already had great carrers.
